Modernizing Webster communications

Posted on August 24, 2016 at 10:25 AM by Katie Stamy

Webster Telecommunications Officers (TCOs) dispatch for multiple different police, fire, and EMS agencies, so a reliable communications system is essential for the region.

In May 2016, Webster City Council approved purchasing new consoles for the communications center to increase ergonomics and efficiency.

This month, crews replaced the old, outdated consoles with new models that allow operators the option of standing up during their 12-hour shifts, increasing employee wellness. The new streamlined consoles also consolidate the various screens used by the TCOs into one defined work area.

Located under a raised sub-flooring in the center are the console cables and wiring. Over the years, the flooring weakened and became a hazard. The renovation improved the sub-flooring with a more robust grid system.

The facility improvements were vitally needed, as the center was last updated in 2003. Technology has evolved and the equipment that once worked no longer provided the employees with what they needed.

In July a new communications tower was constructed behind the police station to improve the communications with first responders further, both locally and regionally.

Webster partnered with Harris County, and First Net public safety broadband LTE to install communication equipment available only to public safety. The tower now supports the new equipment and has capabilities of constant communication.
