Can I Request a Driver's Safety Course?

If you received a citation for a moving violation, you may be eligible to take a Driver’s Safety Course to keep the charge off your driving record.

All requests for a Driver’s Safety Course must be made BEFORE the court date and the court fees will be as follow:

  • $144.00 for offenses occurring in regular traffic areas; or
  • $169.00 for offenses occurring in school zones.

To be eligible to request a Driver’s Safety Course you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must possess a valid, non-commercial Texas driver’s license (active military and spouses or dependent children of active military may present a valid driver’s license from any state);
  • You must have proof of auto insurance in effect on the date of the request with your name listed as a driver; and
  • You must not have taken a driver’s safety course or motorcycle operator’s course for a traffic offense within the last 12 months.

You will not be eligible for a Driver’s Safety Course if:

  • You have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL);
  • You are charged with speeding more than 24 miles per hour over the speed limit;
  • You are charged with Passing a School Bus;
  • You are charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident; or
  • You are charged with committing the offense in a Construction Zone with Workers Present.

You may request to take a Driver’s Safety Course in the following ways:

  • Appear in the Court Office with your driver’s license and insurance anytime during regular business hours BEFORE your court date; or
  • Print and complete a Driver’s Safety Course Request Form (PDF) and send it by fax or email along with a copy of your driver’s license and insurance anytime BEFORE your court date.
  • Fill out the online version of the Driver's Safety Course Request Form BEFORE your court date.

If you are granted permission to take a driver’s safety course you will be given written instructions and will have 90-days to submit your driver’s safety course certificate of completion and your certified driving record from the State.
